I created this pattern because I wanted a beanie that could be more versatile; lightweight enough to wear in the springtime, yet still soft & cozy enough for chilly winter days.
I used my favorite beanie style for this pattern which involves HDC stitches in the back loops and is made extra long so you can fold the bottom over. The stitch gives this beanie a nice knitted look and feel while the fold-over style makes it extra snug & cute.
Want to make your beanie a little cozier? I have another free crochet beanie pattern that’s created using the same technique, but with a worsted-weight yarn. My Cozy Ribbed Beanie Crochet Pattern can be found here.
Yarn:
This beanie crochet pattern is made using Paintbox Yarns Simply DK. This yarn is super soft so you won’t have to worry about it making your head itchy, and it comes in over 60 bright & beautiful colors that are perfect for any season! Of course, any DK yarn will work perfectly fine, just be sure to check your gauge!
LoveCrafts has the full selection of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK (along with tons of fantastic alternatives) that you can find here.
You can make three or more of these beanies with one 3.5oz ball of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK. I’ve already made a few matching sets of beanies for my baby and myself! Handmade Mommy and Me beanie sets are also an adorable baby shower gift idea. ♡

These beanies look especially cute with pom-poms! Try adding a pom-pom in a different color to the top for extra cuteness.

Beanie Crochet Pattern Size Chart:
Stitch counts in the pattern are listed in the same order as the chart: P (3, 6, 12, 24, T, C, A)
Size | Head Circumference | Finished Hat Circumference | Finished Length |
Preemie | 12-13″ (30.5-33cm) | 11.5″ (29.5cm) | 6.25″ (16cm) |
0-3 Months | 13-14″ (33-35.5cm) | 12.5″ (31.5cm) | 6.75″ (17cm) |
3-6 Months | 14-16″ (35.5-40.5cm) | 14.5″ (37cm) | 7.75″ (19.5cm) |
6-12 Months | 16-17″ (40.5-43cm) | 15.25″ (39cm) | 8″ (20cm) |
12-24 Months | 17-18″ (43-45.5cm) | 16″ (40.5cm) | 8.25″ (21cm) |
Toddler | 18-19″ (45.5-48cm) | 17.25″ (44cm) | 8.75″ (22.5cm) |
Child | 19-21″ (48-53.5cm) | 19″ (48cm) | 9.75″ (25cm) |
Adult/Teen | 21-23″ (53.5-58.5cm) | 20.5″ (52cm) | 10.25″ (26cm) |
Best strategy for getting the sizing just right:
1. Measure the head circumference of the person you’re making the beanie for. Then, select the size that matches your measurement from the SIZE CHART. Everybody is a little different, so it’s better to choose your size based on circumference rather than age range.
2. Next, make a swatch to test your gauge. If your swatch has more sts & rows than the pattern calls for, use a larger hook size. Conversely, if your swatch has less sts & rows, use a smaller hook size. Keep in mind that a larger hook will give your beanie more stretch, while a smaller hook will give you less stretch.
3. Once you’ve determined which size to make & which hook size to use, you can start the pattern!
4. After crocheting a row or two, measure the length in order to check that you’re close to the FINISHED LENGTH on the SIZE CHART. If your length is way off, you may want to start over and add or subtract some sts from the foundation chain as needed.
5. Once you get to the end of the pattern, you can test the size by stretching your project out along a tape measure to make sure it stretches enough to fit the circumference you measured in step 1. If it’s way too large, undo a couple rows as needed. Conversely, if it’s not stretching far enough, add a couple more rows as needed. Keep in mind that this pattern looks best when you end on an even-numbered row.
I know that’s a lot of info, and I know that sizing & gauging can be difficult. I put a lot of work into measuring, calculating, and writing this pattern in order to help you get the sizing just right! ♡
Pattern:
Use the following hook according to your size:
- 4.5mm for Preemie & 0-3 Months
- 5.0mm for 3-6 Months – Toddler
- 5.5mm for Child & Adult
Ch 32 (34, 37, 38, 40, 42, 45, 47)
Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Hdc in each ch across. [31 (33, 36, 37, 39, 41, 44, 46)]
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Hdc in each st across. Crochet in the back loops only until you get to the last st. Hdc through both loops on the last st. [31 (33, 36, 37, 39, 41, 44, 46)]
Rows 3 – 38 (40, 44, 46, 48, 52, 52, 56): Repeat row 2
Continue to finishing Instructions. Do not cut the yarn.

Finishing Instructions:
Fold your beanie in half so that the first & last rows are lined up. When folded, the last row should be facing WS out & the first row facing RS out. Then, create a seam with a row of slip stitches.

Once you’ve reached the end of the row, cut the yarn and fasten off (leaving a long tail for sewing). Then, using your yarn needle, weave the tail in and out of the stitches around the top of your beanie.

Pull the end tight to cinch it. Then, sew the top closed and tie it off securely.

Finally, weave in yarn ends. Then, turn your beanie right side out, fold the bottom flap up, and you’re all done! ♡

If you’d like to add a pom-pom, I recommend using a 2.5” pom-pom maker for baby beanies, and a 3&3/8” pom-pom maker for child & adult beanies. I use the Clover Pom-Pom Maker Set to make my pom-poms! If you need some help making your pom-pom, you can follow the pom-pom instructions at the end of my Cozy Ribbed Beanie Pattern.
