Yarn

I used KnitPicks Swish DK and Swish Worsted for my ornaments. You can use any yarn, but keep in mind that different yarn weights will affect the size of your finished ornaments. I recommend using DK or worsted-weight yarn for this crochet pattern so your mini beanies don’t turn out too big or too small!

This Christmas crochet pattern is perfect for stash-busting! Use leftover yarn and scraps from your stash to make these mini beanies and pom-poms!

Looking for the perfect holiday color scheme for your winter projects? I put together a bunch of holiday-themed color palettes in my latest blog post: “Affordable Yarn for Christmas Knit & Crochet Projects – Holiday Color Palettes“

Materials:

CROCHET HOOK: 5.5mm

YARN: DK or worsted weight yarn

  • Recommended: KnitPicks Swish DK or Swish Worsted
  • Yards/Meters: Less than 15 yards / 14 meters

NOTIONS: Scissors, yarn needle

FOR POM-POMS: additional yarn in an accent color and an extra small, 1&3/8″ pom-pom maker (the smallest size from this pom-pom maker set!)

Shows a mini crochet beanie christmas tree ornament with the materials to make it - yarn, scissors, a crochet hook, yarn needle, and pom pom maker

Finished Measurements:

Approximate Length x Width after assembly with brim folded up, not including pom-pom.

Approximately 2.5 x 2.25 inches

Gauge:

Gauge is not critical for this pattern, however, if you wish to achieve similar finished measurements, aim for a gauge that’s identical or close to mine listed below:

2×2 inches or 5×5 centimeters = 9 sts x 6 rows worked in stitch pattern.

Stitch Key:

ST/STSStitch/Stitches
SL STSlip Stitch
CHChain
HDCHalf Double Crochet
BLOBack Loops Only
FOFasten Off
WSWrong Side
RSRight Side

Notes:

  • This is an easy/beginner level crochet pattern
  • Pattern written in US crochet terms
  • The stitch count at the end of each row is shown in parenthesis ( )
  • The CH 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.
  • This beanie will start out as a simple rectangle that will then be seamed to create the beanie shape.

Pattern:

CH 18

Row 1: HDC in the back bump of the 2nd CH from hook. HDC in the back bump of each CH across. (17 HDC)

Text: back bump of CH, highlighted in pink

Image shows a crocheted chain, highlighting the location of the back bumps of the chain.
The back bump of the CH is located on the back side of your CH (the opposite side of the “V”). Crocheting your first row into the back bumps will create a clean starting edge, and this step will be important when completing the finishing instructions.

Row 2: CH 1, turn. HDC in the BLO across until you reach the last ST. HDC through both loops of the last ST. (17 HDC)

Repeat row 2 until you have 14 rows total.

FO leaving a tail approximately 10 inches / 25 centimeters long, or about 3 times the length of your beanie. Continue to the assembly instructions.

Assembly:

Note: The following method of seaming will help keep the ribbed pattern consistent throughout the entire beanie for a perfect, seamless look.

1. Fold your beanie in half so that the first & last rows are lined up. When folded, the final row that you just completed should be facing RS out.

Text: final row facing RS (right side) out when folded

2. Attach your yarn needle to the long tail and position your beanie with the first row in the front, facing you and your final row in the back, away from you.

3. Secure your seam first by inserting your needle through the starting CH of row 1 & the back loop on the last ST of your final row. Pull the yarn tail all the way through.

Image: shows a yarn needle creating the first stitch of the beanie's seam

Text: BLO of the last ST on final row & Starting CH of row 1

Note: Beginning your seam this way will result in a flawless edge along the brim of your beanie.

4. Whipstitch your beanie together by inserting your needle through both loops on the next ST of your foundation CH, and the same back loop from Step 3. Pull the yarn tail all the way through.

Image: shows a yarn needle creating the second stitch of the beanie's seam

5. Continue whipstitching in this fashion by sewing through both loops of the foundation CH & the back loop only of the final row. Make sure your STS remain lined up.

6. Once you’ve completed your seam, weave the tail evenly in and out of the stitches around the top of your beanie.

7. Pull the end tight to cinch it. Then, tie your two yarn tails together until you feel that the knot is secure.

8. Weave in or trim ends. Then, turn your beanie right side out and fold the bottom flap up.

9. Attach a hanging loop to the top back of your beanie using an extra piece of yarn.

10. Create a pom-pom using your extra small pom-pom maker and yarn in a different color. While knotting your pom-pom, leave two long tails to attach the pom-pom to the beanie.

11. Using your crochet hook, pull pom-pom tails through the top of the beanie. Then, turn the beanie inside out and tie the pom-pom tails securely.

September 🫧 It’s crazy to think that at this poin September 🫧

It’s crazy to think that at this point a few years ago, I had so much drive to be “successful” and now I really just crave a more simple life. I’m happiest when I can disconnect from all the noise, spend time with my family, take a day off work to do something spontaneous, or extend my morning routine a little longer for a good breakfast or an extra few minutes of fresh air.

Most of the time I feel like I’m just getting “lazy” because I don’t have the energy to spend hours working my day job and then grind to run my own business too. But then I remember how carefree life used to be. Sometimes I wish we didn’t have constant connection to everyone else or AI infiltrating every daily task.

When I started my crochet business it was so much fun, creating things with my hands to mail to my customers. Then I started writing patterns and loved that I could actually make money off of an idea that came from my brain. Now I hardly make a few pattern sales per month because the market is flooded with AI rip-offs of real artists’ work.

And my day job is in marketing which is 100% online, looking at a computer screen typically 6-7 days a week since there’s always something that needs to be done. Marketing used to feel like creative work too and now it feels the same… trying to keep up with bots and algorithms, spending endless hours creating campaigns and strategies that you hope will help the business while knowing that the economy is also failing.

Sometimes I feel like my lack of motivation is a failure, but then I remember that we literally weren’t built to live like this. I wasn’t made to sit on a chair and work on a computer for 6-8 hours a day.

I’m on this earth to experience life and I’m going to take every moment I can to feel the sand between my toes and the ocean breeze, explore the world, look at the stars, talk to my kids about the clouds, create things with my hands… stop chasing algorithms and just keep embracing the little moments and memories, trying to feel what life was like before we were connected to every single person and brand 24/7, when we were still allowed to be curious and not have the immediate answer to every question.

Despite the back to school chaos and everyone getting sick, this past month has been full of new adventures and magical core memories like celebrating one of my best friends beautiful marriage, taking the kids to the fair for the first time, daily morning walks/hikes, and soaking up all the happy little moments 🥂🎠✨

One project that I’ve been excited to work on in my evenings after the kids go to sleep is a new Playdate Tee, pattern by @kneedlesandlife. I loved using the kid’s version of this pattern to make a tee for my daughter, so now I’m using the adult version to make one for myself using CotLin from @knit_picks 🧶

Friendly reminders:
✨ Life is too short to stress over people who don’t value you. Save your energy for those who see you as irreplaceable.
✨ Life is too short to not embrace your inner child. Play games, do puzzles, splash in the water, enjoy the little things.
✨ Life is too short to not make your food fun. Put hot Cheetos on your elote, salt & vinegar chips on your coleslaw, and extra queso on your tacos. 🌮

I don’t know about y’all, but with summer break coming to an end, I feel like I’m in some kind of limbo between wanting to bask in the summer sunshine, and getting ready for a cozy fall season 🌻

But I’m still leaning into summer as much as possible because I really don’t want this sunny season to end! So, I’ve been looking to my yarn stash for more summer project inspiration, and I’m loving cotton and linen fibers right now ☀️

If cotton and linen are your thing, or you’re just looking for some lovely new yarns to try, make sure to check my newest blog post for tons of yarn and fiber recommendations that are perfect for summer, and even the early fall days where you can still feel the warmth from the sun while watching leaves fall to the ground with every cozy little breeze 🍂

June ☀️🍦I haven’t crocheted much of anything since June ☀️🍦I haven’t crocheted much of anything since my last market this month. We’ve just been taking summer break day by day, finding balance, and enjoying the little things, like throwing our own little pickle party at the pool, picking flowers on walks, coloring cute pictures, and of course the mandatory egg sandwich 🥒💐🍄🥪

And while I’ve been trying better to document all of our adventures, I still just can’t seem to get the hang of snapping pictures while I’m just loving living in the moment. Like when I spent the whole day at Magic Mountain with my bestie and forgot to take photos, but at least I got a pic of our parking space so we wouldn’t get lost in the parking lot again like we did last year 😂🤭

I’ll be adding keychains to these cuties too! While I love making these in a “plushie” size as well, the mini keychain versions sell very well for me, and I definitely recommend making them for your markets, (or for yourself)! 🗝️
