This crochet headwrap is made with cotton yarn to help keep you cool during the hottest months and to fit comfortably all year round. Continue reading for the instructions and the story behind this summer crochet pattern.

The word hammada describes rock-strewn deserts, where the headwrap’s inspiration came from.
This summer headwrap was inspired by nature – rocky deserts and sandy dunes, lush mountain ridges, vast meadows speckled with wildflowers, and rolling ocean waves. The subtle texture created by the stitches in this pattern honors the beautiful textures created in nature’s most breathtaking landscapes. The airy finish makes this the perfect hair accessory for hot summer days, yet this versatile style can be worn all year round.
If you’d prefer an ad-free version of this crochet pattern, you can purchase a premium copy from my Etsy, Ribblr, or Ravelry shops. The premium pattern includes a beautifully designed PDF that you can download and print. The PDF also includes exclusive links to a few video short video tutorials.

This crochet pattern is written in 5 different sizes (baby, toddler, child, adult small, and adult large), and it features two different versions (wide & skinny) so you can customize it to fit your size and preferences!
Yarn:
The Hammada Headwrap was designed using 24/7 Cotton. This is a mercerized cotton yarn that has a beautiful sheen, unlike any other yarn! If you’d like to learn more about this yarn, I recently wrote a review that you can read here: Fiber Friday – 24/7 Cotton Yarn Review.
This is a worsted-weight yarn, but it’s on the thinner side, so you can easily substitute it with some DK yarns. I created a list of yarn substitutions from my favorite shops for this summer crochet pattern.
Note: I haven’t found any other mercerized cotton yarns in the same weight category as 24/7 Cotton, so while these alternatives will create a beautiful summer headband, they won’t have the same sheen and texture as they would using 24/7 Cotton.

Other recommended alternatives:
Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/8 – 100% cotton, DK/light worsted
Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/8 – 100% cotton, DK/light worsted
Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran (shown in the photo below) – 100% cotton, Aran/worsted

More recommended alternatives:
This headwrap was designed with summer in mind, but it can easily be made into a multi-seasonal accessory by using different fibers. Try using wool for a cozier, winter headwrap!
