Cozy ribbed beanie - free crochet pattern by noelebelle

These beanies are so cozy and cute, that I find myself wanting to make one in every color possible. The stitch used for this pattern gives the beanie a nice knitted look and feel. Your beanie will be constructed by simply crocheting a long rectangle and then cinching it together at the top.

Want to start with something a little quicker? I also have a headband pattern that’s created using the same technique and materials. My Cozy Ribbed Headband Crochet Pattern can be found here.

Yarn:

This ribbed beanie crochet pattern is made using Vanna’s Choice yarn by Lion Brand. Of course, you can substitute with any worsted-weight yarn. I especially love Vanna’s Choice because they have a variety of gorgeous hues that are perfect for autumn & winter.

One of my favorite alternatives is Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran because it’s available in over 60 bright & beautiful colors that are perfect for any season!

Another option is Brava Worsted from Knit Picks. You can also try Brava Speckle for a pop of color, or Brava Tweed for a more rustic look.

Generally, 1 ball of Vanna’s Choice is enough to make one beanie, however, I’ve noticed that sometimes I need just a little bit more to finish the beanie when my tension is off. I always buy a couple of balls just to be safe, especially if I plan on adding a pom-pom. These beanies look extra cute with pom-poms! Try adding a pom-pom in a different color to the top for extra cuteness!

I also love changing it up and using Lion Brand Landscapes self-striping yarn! Beanies shown above were made with the colors Boardwalk and Blue Lagoon.

Sizing:

This pattern is for an adult-size beanie. You can make smaller sizes by simply starting with a shorter foundation chain and crocheting fewer rows. I will be writing another pattern featuring all sizes, including baby sizes, super soon! Make sure to subscribe to my newsletter to get notified when new patterns are available.

Finished Measurements:

Notes:

  • This is an easy/beginner level crochet pattern
  • Pattern written in US crochet terms
  • The stitch count at the end of each row is shown in parenthesis ( )
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.
  • This beanie will start out as a rectangle that will then be sewn up to create the beanie shape.
  • If you’d like your beanie to be smaller, start with a shorter foundation chain and crochet less than 42 rows. Make sure you still end on an even numbered row.
  • If you’d like to make your beanie wider, continue adding rows. Make sure you still end on an even numbered row.

Ribbed Beanie Crochet Pattern:

Ch 41

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Hdc in each ch across. (40)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Hdc in each st across. Crochet in the back loops only until you get to the last st. Hdc through both loops on the last st. (40)

Rows 3 – 42: Repeat row 2

Continue to finishing Instructions. Do not cut the yarn.

Finishing Instructions:

Fold your beanie in half so that the first & last rows are lined up. When folded, the last row should be facing WS out & the first row facing RS out. Create a seam with a row of slip stitches.

Once you’ve reached the end of the row, cut the yarn and fasten off (leaving a long tail for sewing). Then, using your yarn needle, weave the tail in and out of the stitches around the top of your beanie.

Pull the end tight to cinch it. Then, sew the top closed and tie it off securely.

Weave in yarn ends and turn your beanie right side out. Then, fold the bottom flap up and you’re all done! ♡

Pom-Pom Instructions (Optional):

Using your pom-pom maker, (I use the Clover Pom-Pom Maker, size 3&3/8″) make a fluffy pom-pom with the same color yarn as your beanie, or a different yarn for an extra pop of color. Tie your pom-pom off leaving long tails to attach it to the beanie.

How to make a pom pom, visual reference

Using your crochet hook, pull pom-pom tails through the top of the beanie. Then, turn the beanie inside out and tie the pom-pom tails securely.

Adding a pom pom to a beanie

Next, weave the yarn tails back through the top of the beanie and incorporate them into the pom-pom. Cut the tails so that they are the same length as the pom-pom strands.
