New and improved design
I’m so excited to introduce my new and IMPROVED ribbed crochet beanie pattern! I’ve always loved making these simple ribbed beanies. The ribbed design creates a quality look and feel, making these beanies perfect for gift-giving and craft markets. Plus, this accessory is a wardrobe staple, so you’ll want to make a few for yourself! Go bold with a bright pink or red, or make it versatile with a neutral beige, cream, or grey.
I’ve previously released two similar ribbed beanie patterns, the Spring Beanie, and the Cozy Ribbed Beanie. These patterns are two of my bestselling patterns, and since publishing these patterns, I’ve learned a few tips and tricks for perfecting the design. This new and improved beanie pattern incorporates all of my new design elements into the same simple construction method.
Special features
Little details can make a big difference! The Cozy Campfire Beanie has a few extra special touches that help to perfect the design.
- THE STITCH: This pattern uses half double crochet stitches worked into the back loops which creates a beautiful ribbed texture that looks more like knit than crochet, and feels super soft and squishy!
- THE CONSTRUCTION: The construction of this beanie makes it super easy to crochet. Instead of working in the round, you’ll create a rectangle that will be seamed along the side and then cinched at the top.
- SEAMLESS DESIGN: The Cozy Campfire Beanie features a streamlined design with an invisible seam, resulting in a flawless, professional appearance. This is done by crocheting your first row into the back bumps of the chain and using a specific seaming method during the assembly process.
- TAPERED CROWN: This beanie also features a smooth crown, so it won’t be bumpy at the top after cinching. Beanies that are made using this rectangular construction method will typically bunch up at the top. In order to prevent the beanie from bunching up, this pattern uses slip stitches at one end of the beanie to gradually taper the top of the hat.

Yarn
The recommended yarn for this Cozy Campfire Beanie is Swish Bulky from KnitPicks, a 100% fine superwash merino wool that’s super soft and also super affordable!
Bulky weight (5) yarns can vary a lot in thickness. This yarn is on the thinner side of bulky weight yarns, so heavy worsted/Aran weight yarns are also suitable for this pattern. I highly recommend using a thinner bulky weight (5) or thicker worsted/Aran weight (4) yarn for this pattern. In addition to the recommended yarn, Swish Bulky, I have provided more alternatives below to help you find the perfect yarn for your Cozy Campfire Beanie. You can also visit yarnsub.com for more recommendations
MORE WOOL ALTERNATIVES: KnitPicks Wool of the Andes Superwash Bulky, Poppy & Spruce Fibers Bulky
When selecting wool yarn I recommend using a superwash or machine washable wool for easy care. Acrylic yarns are also a great choice for this pattern for ease of care and hypoallergenic purposes.
ACRYLIC ALTERNATIVES: KnitPicks Brava Bulky, Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky
THE FUZZY EDIT: Want to make a fuzzy version of this beanie like the one I made shown below? Try Lion Brand Feels Like Bliss yarn for the perfect soft, fuzzy beanie!

Lion Brand Feels Like Bliss works perfectly with this free crochet beanie pattern, however, fuzzy yarn can make it more difficult to see your stitches. Unless you already have experience with fuzzy yarns, I would recommend practicing this pattern with a wool or acrylic yarn first! ♡

The Adult Large size of this crochet pattern is perfect for making men’s beanies! My husband loves his, and I made a matching one for our son too.

Sizing Tips
- Measure the head circumference of the person you’re making the beanie for using a soft, flexible measuring tape. Then, select the size that matches your measurement from the Size Chart. Everybody is a little different, so it’s better to choose your size based on circumference rather than age range if you can.
- For a roomier fit, size up. For a more snug fit, size down.
- Make a swatch to test your gauge. If your swatch has more STS & rows than the pattern calls for, use a larger hook size. If your swatch has less STS & rows, use a smaller hook size.
Key
| ST/STS | Stitch/Stitches |
| SL ST | Slip Stitch |
| CH | Chain |
| HDC | Half Double Crochet |
| BLO | Back Loops Only |
| FO | Fasten Off |
| WS | Wrong Side |
| RS | Right Side |
Notes
- This is an easy/beginner level crochet pattern
- Pattern written in US crochet terms
- Sizes are listed in the following order: Preemie (Newborn, Baby, Toddler) (Child, Adult Small, Adult Large)
- The stitch count at the end of each row is shown in brackets [ ]
- The CH 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.
- This beanie will start out as a rectangle that will then be sewn up to create the beanie shape.
- Tip: This beanie is tapered at the top to help smooth out the crown. This is done by working SL STS instead of HDC on the top end of the beanie. Keep your tension loose while working your SL STS to prevent them from being too tight to work into.
Gauge
4″ x 4″ = 14 STS x 10 rows worked over HDC in the BLO

Materials
Crochet Hook: 7.0mm or size needed to obtain gauge
Yarn: Bulky weight yarn, or heavy Aran/worsted weight yarn
- Recommended Yarn: KnitPicks Swish Bulky
- Yards/Meters: Approximately 40 (57, 80, 100) (128, 153, 188) yards / 37 (52, 73, 91) (117, 140, 172) meters. Calculations do not include pom-poms, you will require additional yarn if you plan on making a yarn pom-pom.
- Note: The recommended yarn for this pattern is on the thinner side of bulky weight yarns. This pattern is not intended for thick bulky weight yarn. I highly suggest using the recommended yarn, one of the alternatives listed in this post, or a yarn very similar to my recommendation/alternatives. (See the YARN section above the size chart for more alternative recommendations.)
Extras: Yarn needle, scissors
Pom-Pom (Optional): Make your own yarn pom, or top your beanie off with a faux fur pom. I have listed a few of my favorite pom-pom options below.
- Yarn Pom-Pom: Additional yarn, Clover Pom-Pom Maker (I recommend the 2.5″ size for all baby sizes, and the 3&3/8″ size for toddler, child, and adult sizes)
- Pom-Pom Ideas: Use the same color yarn as your beanie for a cohesive look, or a different color yarn to make it stand out! Pom-poms are great for using up scrap yarn from other projects, and you can use any yarn weight!
- Faux Fur Pom-Pom:
- DIY: Make your own faux fur pom-pom! Here’s a great tutorial from Yarn and Chai on YouTube.
- Pre-made/Handmade: You can find a bunch of beautiful handmade pom-poms on Etsy. My favorite ones are from NWI Knits!
- Pre-made/budget: Stock up on some budget-friendly poms in a variety of colors from KnitPicks, or buy in bulk from Amazon.
- Note: When attaching pom-poms to your beanie, it’s easier if your poms are made with tie strings, yet most of these budget options come with loops or snaps. When using poms that don’t have ties, I prefer to use a strand of yarn to sew the pom onto the beanie. You can watch this quick tutorial from Camryn’s Cute Creations for guidance!
Pattern
CH 23 (27, 30, 33) (36, 39, 42)
Row 1: HDC in the back bump of the 2nd CH from hook. HDC in the back bump of each CH across until you reach the last 2 (2, 2, 2) (2, 3, 3) chains. SL ST in the back bumps of the last 2 (2, 2, 2) (2, 3, 3) chains. [22 (26, 29, 32) (35, 38, 41)]
Note: Make sure to follow this step of crocheting into the back bumps of the CH. (See Figure 1: Back Bump of Chain). This will be important later during the finishing steps!

The back bump of the CH is located on the back side of your CH (the opposite side of the “V”). This will create a clean starting edge, and this step will be important when completing the finishing instructions.
Row 2: CH 1, turn. SL ST in the BLO of the first 2 (2, 2, 2) (2, 3, 3) STS. HDC in the BLO across until you reach the last ST. HDC through both loops of the last ST. [22 (26, 29, 32) (35, 38, 41)]
Row 3: CH 1, turn. HDC in the BLO across until you reach the last 2 (2, 2, 2) (2, 3, 3) STS. SL ST in the BLO of the last 2 (2, 2, 2) (2, 3, 3) STS. [22 (26, 29, 32) (35, 38, 41)]
Repeat rows 2 & 3 until you have 20 (24, 30, 34) (40, 44, 50) rows total.
Note: At this point, you can test the size by stretching your project around your head or along a tape measure to make sure it fits your desired circumference. If it’s too large, undo a couple of rows as needed. Conversely, if it’s too small, add a couple more rows as needed. Make sure to end on an even-numbered row!
FO leaving a tail approximately 18 (22, 24, 27) (30, 32, 35) inches / 46 (56, 61, 69) (76, 81, 89) centimeters long, or about 3 times the length of your beanie.

This is what the beanie should look like after completing the pattern & before starting the finishing instructions.
Finishing Instructions
1. Fold your beanie in half so that the first & last rows are lined up. When folded, the final row that you just completed should be facing RS out.

2. Attach your yarn needle to the long tail and position your beanie with the first row in the front, facing you and your final row in the back, away from you.

3. Secure your seam first by inserting your needle through the starting CH of row 1 & the back loop on the last ST of your final row. Pull the yarn tail all the way through.

Note: Beginning your seam this way will result in a flawless edge along the brim of your beanie.
4. Whipstitch your beanie together by inserting your needle through both loops on the next ST of your foundation CH, and the same back loop from Step 3. Pull the yarn tail all the way through.

5. Continue whipstitching in this fashion by sewing through both loops of the foundation CH & the back loop only of the final row. Make sure your STS remain lined up.

Note: This method of seaming will help keep the ribbed pattern consistent throughout the entire beanie for a perfect, seamless look.
6. Once you’ve completed your seam, weave the tail evenly in and out of the stitches around the top of your beanie.

7. Pull the end tight to cinch it. Then, tie your two yarn tails together until you feel that the knot is secure.

8. Weave in any remaining ends. Then, turn your beanie right side out, fold the bottom flap up, and you’re all done!

Optional: Attach a pom-pom to the top if you’d like! See the Materials section above for tips on creating and attaching pom-poms.
