Yarn

These adorable crochet pumpkins are made with Wool-Ease Thick & Quick from Lion Brand, a super bulky wool/acrylic blend that comes in a variety of gorgeous colors.

Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, super bulky, 80% acrylic, 20% wool

You can also feel free to play around with different yarn weights and hook sizes to create smaller or bigger pumpkins!

Alternative Super bulky yarn recommendations

Here are some more of my favorite super bulky weight yarns to use for this free crochet pumpkin pattern!

Paintbox Yarns Simply Super Chunky, super bulky, 100% acrylic

Paintbox Yarns Wool Mix Super Chunky, super bulky, 50% acrylic, 50% wool

Paintbox Yarns Wool Blend Super Chunky, super bulky, 75% acrylic, 25% wool

Lion Brand Hometown, super bulky, 100% acrylic

Can I use other yarn weights with this pattern?

Of course! This pattern will work with any yarn weight, just keep in mind the thinner the yarn you use, the smaller your pumpkins will be.

Stack of crochet pumpkins made with bulky wool yarn
Cinnamon Spice crochet pumpkin pattern

Below is an example of a pumpkin I made with Lion Brand’s Hue + Me (orange), a bulky weight yarn, next to one made with Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (white) super bulky. Both pumpkins were crocheted using the small pumpkin pattern size from this free crochet pumpkin pattern!

This free crochet pumpkin pattern contains a few intermediate-level techniques, such as working in the round, increasing and decreasing stitches, and special stitches. However, if you’re a beginner, have no fear! I’ve included photos and detailed instructions to guide you the whole way through this pattern.

Materials:

CROCHET HOOK: 7mm (I used the 7mm hook from this Clover Amour jumbo crochet hook set!)

YARN: Super Bulky, weight 6

  • Recommended: Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick
  • Alternative Recommendations:
    • Paintbox Yarns Simply Super Chunky
    • Paintbox Yarns Wool Mix Super Chunky
    • Paintbox Yarns Wool Blend Super Chunky
    • Lion Brand Hometown
    • Lion Brand Hue + Me (for smaller pumpkins)
  • Yards/Meters: Approximately 16 (32, 48) yards / 15 (30, 44) meters

STUFFING: Poly-Fil (I use Fairfield Crafter’s Choice)

STEMS: Crochet your own stem or use a cinnamon stick

  • Crocheted Stem: You’ll need additional yarn in a brown color and an appropriate crochet hook to use with your yarn. I recommend using worsted, weight 4 yarn and a 5mm crochet hook.
  • Cinnamon Stem: McCormick cinnamon sticks or similar

OPTIONAL: Jute twine or ribbon to tie around the stem for a cute farmhouse look (I use this jute twine from Amazon).

EXTRAS: Scissors, a long yarn needle

Finished Measurements:

Approximate Diameter x Height after assembly, not including stem.

Small Pumpkin: 3.5×2 inches or 9×5 centimeters

Medium Pumpkin: 4.5×2.5 inches or 11.5×6.5 centimeters

Large Pumpkin: 6×3.5 inches or 15×9 centimeters

Using different yarn weights and hook sizes will affect the size of your pumpkins.

Gauge:

2×2 inches or 5×5 centimeters = 4.5 sts x 4 rows worked in stitch pattern.

Gauge is not critical for this pattern. You can adjust the size of your pumpkins by using different yarn weights and hook sizes. Most importantly, you want to make sure your stitches are tight enough that the stuffing does not show through.

Stitch Key:

MR: Magic Ring

ST/STS: Stitch/Stitches

CH: Chain

SC: Single Crochet

DC: Double Crochet

SC2TOG: Single Crochet 2 Stitches Together

DC2TOG: Double Crochet 2 Stitches Together

RND/RNDS: Round/Rounds

REP: Repeat

YO: Yarn Over

FO: Fasten Off

Special Stitches:

These pumpkins are crocheted using a lovely, textured stitch pattern that’s commonly referred to as the “lemon peel stitch” which is created by simply alternating SC and DC stitches.

Decreasing Stitches:

To keep the stitch pattern consistent, we will be using special decreasing stitches at the top of the pumpkins. They are similar to SC2TOG and DC2TOG decreases, except you will be working one unfinished SC and one unfinished DC, and then completing as one stitch. Please follow the guide below when working your decreasing stitches.

SC+DC2TOG (Single Crochet + Double Crochet 2 Stitches Together): Insert hook in next ST, pull up a loop (unfinished SC made). YO, insert hook in next ST, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), YO, pull through 2 loops (unfinished DC made). YO, pull through all 3 remaining loops.

DC+SC2TOG (Double Crochet + Single Crochet 2 Stitches Together): YO, insert hook in next ST, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), YO, pull through 2 loops (unfinished DC made). Insert hook in next ST, pull up a loop (unfinished SC made). YO, pull through all 3 remaining loops.

Notes:

  • Crochet skill level: easy-intermediate
  • This pattern is written in US crochet terms.
  • The stitch count at the end of each row is shown in parentheses. ( )
  • The CH 1 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as a stitch.
  • This pattern is worked in turned rounds to add texture to the stitch pattern.
  • This pattern is written in 3 different pumpkin sizes. There is a separate pattern listed for each size below: Small (Medium, Large).
  • You can further adjust the size of your pumpkins by using different yarn weights & hook sizes.
  • Your stitches should be tight enough that no stuffing will show through the fabric.

This pattern is worked in turned rounds, meaning you will turn your project at the beginning of each new round. If you’re having trouble identifying where to place your stitches, please refer to the guide below:

Cinnamon Spice Crochet Pumpkin pattern, photo guide shows where to work your 1st and last stitches of each round.

The photo above shows the beginning of round 3 after “CH 1 and turn.” The pink stitch marker shows where you will work your 1st stitch of the new round (this will be the last stitch of your previous round). And the purple stitch marker shows where you will work your last stitch of the new round (this will be the 1st stitch of your previous round and the same stitch used to join the previous round).

Note: Instructions for special decreasing stitches are listed under the stitch key!

FO leaving a long tail about 45 inches or 114 centimeters. Proceed to stem pattern and assembly instructions.

Stem pattern:

If you’re using a stick or cinnamon stick as your stem, you can skip this section and proceed to the assembly instructions.

For your stem, you’ll need a small amount of brown yarn and an appropriate crochet hook. I recommend using worsted, weight 4 yarn and a 5mm crochet hook.

CH 7 (8, 9)

SC in the 2nd CH from hook and in each CH across. Tip: SC in the back bumps of your CH for a neater edge.

Note: Your stems will curl slightly if you crochet your SC stitches tightly. You can also twist the stem to make it curl.

FO and tie your ends together in a secure knot. Do not cut the ends off. Set aside until needed in assembly instructions.

The photo above shows 3 finished stems. The stems on the left and right were made with tighter SC stitches which makes them curl naturally. I used Lion Brand Skein Tones yarn for my pumpkin stems!

Assembly:

Step 1: Stuff with Poly-Fil, do not over stuff.

Step 2 (cinnamon stick stems only): If you’re using a cinnamon stick as your stem, insert it into the middle of your pumpkin. If it’s too difficult to get the cinnamon stick through the stuffing, you can push your crochet hook through the center to help make an opening for the cinnamon stick.

Step 3: Attach your needle to your long yarn tail. Weave yarn tail in and out of the STS around the last RND of your pumpkin. Pull tight to cinch the STS. Do not cut your yarn. This should cinch the top snugly around your stick, or closed if you’re crocheting a stem.

Step 4: Insert your yarn needle into the top center of the pumpkin and push through to the bottom center. Wrap your long yarn tail around the outside of the pumpkin, then push the needle back into the top center and through to the bottom center. Pull tightly to create an indent. Repeat about 4-5 times to shape your pumpkin.

Step 5: Secure with a knot at the bottom center of your pumpkin. Using your yarn needle, hide your yarn tail inside your pumpkin and trim any remaining ends.

Step 6 (crocheted stems only): Use the yarn ends from your stem to tie your stem to the top of the pumpkin. Hide the ends inside your pumpkin using your yarn needle.

Step 7 (optional): Tie a small piece of jute twine or ribbon around your stem in a bow.

You’re all done!

Cinnamon stick tips:

  • If your cinnamon stick is not staying in place, you can dab a small amount of hot glue on the bottom of the stick and carefully secure it back into the center of your pumpkin.
  • If your cinnamon stick is too long and you’d like to shorten it, I recommend using a sharp knife and carefully cutting it shorter. Scissors can tend to crack and break the cinnamon, so a knife will help you get a cleaner cut without breaking the stick.

To create a stack of pumpkins:

Crochet one pumpkin in each size. Omit stems for the Medium and Large pumpkins. Using a piece of yarn and your long yarn needle, sew the top of the Large pumpkin to the bottom of the Medium pumpkin. Tie about 3 secure knots and trim the remaining yarn ends. Then, sew the top of the Medium pumpkin to the bottom of the Small pumpkin. Tie about 3 secure knots and trim the remaining yarn ends.

Tip: A curved yarn needle helps to weave through the stitches on the tops and bottoms of your pumpkins.

September 🫧 It’s crazy to think that at this poin September 🫧

It’s crazy to think that at this point a few years ago, I had so much drive to be “successful” and now I really just crave a more simple life. I’m happiest when I can disconnect from all the noise, spend time with my family, take a day off work to do something spontaneous, or extend my morning routine a little longer for a good breakfast or an extra few minutes of fresh air.

Most of the time I feel like I’m just getting “lazy” because I don’t have the energy to spend hours working my day job and then grind to run my own business too. But then I remember how carefree life used to be. Sometimes I wish we didn’t have constant connection to everyone else or AI infiltrating every daily task.

When I started my crochet business it was so much fun, creating things with my hands to mail to my customers. Then I started writing patterns and loved that I could actually make money off of an idea that came from my brain. Now I hardly make a few pattern sales per month because the market is flooded with AI rip-offs of real artists’ work.

And my day job is in marketing which is 100% online, looking at a computer screen typically 6-7 days a week since there’s always something that needs to be done. Marketing used to feel like creative work too and now it feels the same… trying to keep up with bots and algorithms, spending endless hours creating campaigns and strategies that you hope will help the business while knowing that the economy is also failing.

Sometimes I feel like my lack of motivation is a failure, but then I remember that we literally weren’t built to live like this. I wasn’t made to sit on a chair and work on a computer for 6-8 hours a day.

I’m on this earth to experience life and I’m going to take every moment I can to feel the sand between my toes and the ocean breeze, explore the world, look at the stars, talk to my kids about the clouds, create things with my hands… stop chasing algorithms and just keep embracing the little moments and memories, trying to feel what life was like before we were connected to every single person and brand 24/7, when we were still allowed to be curious and not have the immediate answer to every question.
August 🎡🍓👟 Despite the back to school chaos and e August 🎡🍓👟

Despite the back to school chaos and everyone getting sick, this past month has been full of new adventures and magical core memories like celebrating one of my best friends beautiful marriage, taking the kids to the fair for the first time, daily morning walks/hikes, and soaking up all the happy little moments 🥂🎠✨

One project that I’ve been excited to work on in my evenings after the kids go to sleep is a new Playdate Tee, pattern by @kneedlesandlife. I loved using the kid’s version of this pattern to make a tee for my daughter, so now I’m using the adult version to make one for myself using CotLin from @knit_picks 🧶

Friendly reminders:
✨ Life is too short to stress over people who don’t value you. Save your energy for those who see you as irreplaceable.
✨ Life is too short to not embrace your inner child. Play games, do puzzles, splash in the water, enjoy the little things.
✨ Life is too short to not make your food fun. Put hot Cheetos on your elote, salt & vinegar chips on your coleslaw, and extra queso on your tacos. 🌮

I don’t know about y’all, but with summer break coming to an end, I feel like I’m in some kind of limbo between wanting to bask in the summer sunshine, and getting ready for a cozy fall season 🌻

But I’m still leaning into summer as much as possible because I really don’t want this sunny season to end! So, I’ve been looking to my yarn stash for more summer project inspiration, and I’m loving cotton and linen fibers right now ☀️

If cotton and linen are your thing, or you’re just looking for some lovely new yarns to try, make sure to check my newest blog post for tons of yarn and fiber recommendations that are perfect for summer, and even the early fall days where you can still feel the warmth from the sun while watching leaves fall to the ground with every cozy little breeze 🍂

June ☀️🍦I haven’t crocheted much of anything since June ☀️🍦I haven’t crocheted much of anything since my last market this month. We’ve just been taking summer break day by day, finding balance, and enjoying the little things, like throwing our own little pickle party at the pool, picking flowers on walks, coloring cute pictures, and of course the mandatory egg sandwich 🥒💐🍄🥪

And while I’ve been trying better to document all of our adventures, I still just can’t seem to get the hang of snapping pictures while I’m just loving living in the moment. Like when I spent the whole day at Magic Mountain with my bestie and forgot to take photos, but at least I got a pic of our parking space so we wouldn’t get lost in the parking lot again like we did last year 😂🤭
