Spring is officially here, and it’s the perfect time to refresh your yarn stash for warm-weather WIPs. I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite, affordable yarns for breezy spring projects, and fresh summer makes! Whether you’re looking to cast on a new garment for your wardrobe or crochet your way to your next sunny market, these skeins are a staple for the season!
Best spring/summer fibers
When you’re yarn shopping for the warmer seasons, what is the best fiber content to look for? While every fiber has its time and place, lightweight, natural fibers such as cotton, linen, and bamboo are perfect for creating airy knit and crochet garments that will keep you cool and comfortable! These light yet durable fibers are also great for all of your spring and summer accessories, from market bags to shawls!
There are so many affordable cotton, linen, and bamboo yarns and blends on the market. I’ve listed some of my personal favorites below, in no particular order, that I know you’ll love too! Plus, I made sure to include plenty of patterns and project ideas to help inspire you!

Premier Yarns Cotton Sprout

This is one of the SOFTEST 100% cotton yarns I’ve ever tried! Cotton Sprout from Premier Yarns comes in worsted and DK weights, perfect for everything from spring garments to summer accessories. These yarns are super affordable (about $5 per 100g skein) and come in 30-40 bright, pastel, bold, and neutral colors. They also have a self-striping sport weight version to add a unique spin on your crochet and knit projects!
I love this yarn for any type of granny square project, and thanks to the color range, the options for granny squares are endless! I’ve been using my worsted-weight Cotton Sprout yarn to make these adorable mini toddler purses for my spring markets, and they have been a huge hit! Cotton Sprout DK would also be perfect for warm-weather crochet and knit garments.
Project Inspiration: I make toddler purses or “bitty bags” like the one shown above by finding free granny square patterns on Pinterest. I simply connect two squares by crocheting a border along three sides, and lastly, add straps! If you’d like some granny square inspiration, you can browse my granny square Pinterest board here!
Paintbox Yarns cotton

Paintbox Yarns is another brand that offers a variety of soft, affordable cotton yarns. They currently offer 100% cotton yarns in aran, DK, and fingering weights. These yarns are about $4 per 50g skein, and they are often on sale! Paintbox cotton yarns come in 60+ beautiful colors (31 for fingering weight).
Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran is another yarn that’s great for granny square bags, water bottle holders, washcloths, coasters, and all kinds of summer accessories! The lighter weight Paintbox cotton yarns would be perfect for making crochet or knit tops, shawls, beach dresses, and everything in between.
Project Inspiration: I’m using Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran for the granny squares shown above to make All About Ami’s Breezy Days Daisy Bag. This crochet bag uses only 13 granny squares, making it a quick and super cute summer crochet project!
24/7 Cotton

24/7 Cotton is a 100% mercerized cotton yarn that comes in a variety of gorgeous shades. The mercerization process gives this yarn a slight sheen and tons of extra durability. This yarn comes in 50+ colors and is available for $5.99 per 100g skein. I previously wrote a review about this yarn on my blog with everything you need to know about it and all of the reasons why I love it. You can read my “24/7 Cotton Yarn Review” here!
The durability and natural fibers make this yarn great for market bags, shawls, and home decor. This yarn also provides beautiful stitch definition, which makes it perfect for trying out unique stitches and lace patterns.
Project Inspiration: I’ve been using 24/7 cotton this season to crochet myself a new farmers market bag! The bag shown above was created using the French Market Bag pattern by Two of Wands in the color Ecru.
Truboo

If you love bamboo clothing, you need to try this yarn! Truboo is a DK-weight yarn derived from bamboo, giving it an incredible drape and soft, breezy texture. This yarn’s color palette is perfect for dreamy spring and summer projects! The bamboo fibers have a natural cooling quality that feels amazing on hot days. Truboo is only $5.99 per skein, and I love how much yardage you get with this yarn (241 yds in each 100g skein)!
Thanks to the soft, lightweight nature of this yarn, it’s perfect for all kinds of garments, from tank tops to cardigans. You would only need a few skeins for a summery tank or tee, or a little more to make a beautiful beachy cover-up cardigan or dress!
Project Inspiration: I used Truboo in the color Goldenrod to make the Yara Camisole by Wood and Yarn in the photo shown above! It’s the perfect top to throw on on hot days, and the made-to-measure pattern is 100% customizable, so you can make it to your preferences.
Touch of linen

Linen is a great fiber choice for breathable, warm-weather knit and crochet garments, and this yarn has the perfect blend of cotton and linen. Touch of Linen from Lion Brand is a worsted-weight yarn made from 51% cotton and 49% linen (though it’s closer to DK weight in my opinion). This yarn has fewer color options, but the palette is perfect for all of your spring and summer staples!
Touch of Linen works up with a gorgeous stitch definition and is great for creating flowy garments. You can use this yarn for almost any spring/summer garment, from wardrobe staples to statement pieces, or maybe even a pair of essential linen shorts!
Project Inspiration: I used Touch of Linen to make myself a Buttercup Top from ShopDaisyandDime, and I loved it so much that I made another one for my mom!
CotLin

I could not complete this list without one of the best cotton/linen blends on the market. CotLin is a DK-weight yarn that has the perfect balance of softness and strength. It’s made with a blend of 70% Tanguis cotton and 30% linen, and it comes in 50 beautiful colors. KnitPicks states that, “summer linen has an extended growing period, which results in a longer, stronger fiber. When blended with the already strong Tanguis cotton, it makes a durable, wearable, and soft yarn. The knit fabric will get softer with each wash, too.”
This yarn is great for knit and crochet garments, from comfy t-shirts to flowy cardigans. In addition to garments, it would also be great for spa gifts, hand towels, and all kinds of warm-weather accessories!
Project Inspiration: This yarn would be perfect for making Two of Wand’s Quartz Pullover (crochet), or Kneedles and Life’s Playdate Tee (knit).
