Mommy and Me Chunky Fall Beanies

Mommy and me beanies and crochet pumpkin

I know I’ve created these hats in practically every size, color, and yarn weight possible, but I just really LOVE this pattern for beanies. The pattern is so fun and easy to work up, and the stitches come out so soft and pretty. Of course, I had to try making a chunky crochet beanie with another one of my favorite Paintbox yarns – Simply Chunky. The two major benefits of using this yarn: it’s thicker so it cuts crocheting time in half, and it’s SUPER WARM!

I used the same sizing chart that I created for my Spring Beanie Crochet Pattern and adjusted it to make autumn beanies. The measurements worked perfectly for my 9-month-old daughter and myself (using the 6-12 month size and the adult size). I just needed to alter my foundation chain and the number of rows for each beanie to make the pattern work for chunky yarn.

I was able to make both beanies with 2 balls of Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky, and I had enough yarn left over to crochet a cute little pumpkin. Of course, the pumpkin turned into a toy for my daughter instead of serving as festive fall decor.

I used my favorite pattern for these beanies which involves HDC stitches in the back loops. The stitch gives the beanies a nice knitted look and feel, and the fold-over style makes them extra snug & cute. I had to alter my original Spring Beanie Crochet Pattern a little bit to accommodate the chunky yarn.

Here’s the pattern that I used for these mommy & me chunky crochet beanies. This is not the full crochet pattern. This is just a section of the pattern that I used for my Spring Beanie with altered stitch and row counts.

Chunky Beanie Pattern:

All stitches are in US terms. HDC = half double crochet. CH = chain. ST = stitch.

Yarn: Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky in Vanilla Cream (I also used Vanna’s Choice in Oatmeal for the pom-poms)

Hook: 6.5mm

Sizes: 6-12 months (adult)

Ch 29 (37)

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Hdc in each ch across. [28 (36)]

Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Hdc in each st across. Crochet in the back loops only until you get to the last st. Hdc through both loops on the last st. [28 (36)]

Rows 3 – 36 (42): Repeat row 2

If you’d like to add a pom-pom, I recommend using a 2.5” pom-pom maker for baby beanies, and a 3&3/8” pom-pom maker for child & adult beanies. If you need some help making your pom-pom, you can follow the pom-pom instructions at the end of my Cozy Ribbed Beanie Pattern.

I haven’t taken the time to write up the pattern for the cute little pumpkin, but I know there are a ton of amazing crochet pumpkin patterns out there. I’d be happy to write one in the future if anyone is interested!

Pumpkin:

For this pumpkin, I just made a rectangle using SC (single crochet) in the back loops only. Next, I made a row of SC’s around the long edges of the rectangle, sewed the short edges together, and cinched up the bottom. Lastly, I stuffed the pumpkin, cinched the top closed, and made a little stem to sew on top.
