This design is quick and easy to make! You can wear your finished piece as a bralette or bikini top paired with your favorite bottoms or jean shorts. This was one of the very first tops that I ever designed. I made the first one while on vacation in Maui so that I’d have something cute to wear all day while exploring the city and the beaches. It’s still one of my favorite designs to wear because it’s so comfy and versatile!

Yarn:

This pattern is made using Lily Sugar ‘n Cream cotton yarn. I prefer using cotton or hemp yarns to make these tops because they tend to be more sturdy and durable. Any worsted (weight 4) yarn will work perfectly fine, just be sure to check your gauge!

Sizing:

This pattern is available in women’s sizes XS, S, M, L & XL. I have included instructions for making larger or smaller sizes at the end of the pattern, and you can also adjust your size by using a different crochet hook. This is only the first of many crochet top patterns that I’ve designed, I’ll be publishing more free patterns super soon! Make sure you subscribe to my blog to get notified when a new free crochet pattern is available.

One ball of Lily Sugar ‘n Cream yarn (2.5oz) is enough to make any of the sizes listed on this pattern! You should also have enough yarn left over to add fringe to your top! These tops look super cute with a little fringe on the bottom. Instructions for adding fringe are included in this pattern.

Notes:

  • This is an easy/beginner level crochet pattern
  • Pattern written in US crochet terms
  • The stitch count at the end of each row is shown in parenthesis ( )
  • The ch 2 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.
  • Since the ch 2 does not count as a stitch, do not skip the first stitch when starting your rows.
  • When you see a number directly in front of the stitch “2dc” – work 2 double crochet sts into the same stitch.
  • When a number is written after the stitch “dc 2” – work 1 double crochet into each of the next 2 sts.
  • Additional sizing adjustments & instructions for adding fringe included at the end of pattern.

All sizes will start with the base pattern. After finishing the base pattern, continue to the pattern for your size.

Finishing Instructions:

  • Weave in yarn ends.
  • Ch about 200 (220-250 for M, L & XL) to create the back strap.
  • Before attaching the back strap, lay the cups side by side and make sure they’re both facing the same direction. [I prefer to have the last row facing wrong-side up.]
  • Using your yarn needle, attach the strap along the bottom of the cups by weaving it through the sts.
  • Adjust your top until the cups are centered along the back strap.
  • [Optional] If you’d like to attach beads to the straps, do so at this point.
  • Tie a knot at the end of each strap and cut the tails off.

Adding Fringe:

Information is listed in the following order: XS (S, M, L, XL)

  • Cut 24 (28, 28, 32, 32) pieces of yarn, measuring about 14-18” (35.5-45.5cm) each.
  • Grab 2 of the yarn pieces and fold them in half, making sure the ends line up evenly.
  • Starting at the middle of your top, insert your crochet hook through the 3rd st along the bottom of a cup.
  • Pull the folded yarn pieces through the st just enough to create a loop. Reach through the loop with your fingers, grab the yarn tails and pull them through.
  • Make sure your ends are still lined up evenly and pull on the yarn tails until the knot is secure.
  • Continue attaching fringe along the bottom of the cup. Skip 3 sts between each piece of fringe.
  • Repeat steps for the other cup. Trim the fringe along the bottom to make sure the ends are straight.

Additional Sizing Adjustments

Smaller than XS:

  • To make your top smaller than the listed sizes, refer to the Base Pattern.
  • Use a smaller crochet hook (4.0mm)
  • You might want to start with a shorter chain. Only ch until you’ve reached the desired length of your neck strap.
  • Follow the Base Pattern rows. Once you’ve reached the desired width of the cup, stop at that row.
  • Add one row of dc’s to the bottom of the cup. For example, if you stopped after completing row 10 the last 2 rows of your pattern will look like this:

Row 10: Ch 2, turn. Dc 7. 2dc in the next 2 sts. Dc 7. (18)

Row 11: Ch 2, turn. Dc into each st. (18)

  • Continue with the finishing instructions. You may want to make a shorter chain for the back strap.

Larger than XL:

  • You might need an additional ball of yarn depending on how large you make the top.
  • To make your top larger than the listed sizes, complete the Base Pattern first. You may want to make the starting chain longer by continuing to ch until you’ve reached the desired length of your neck strap.
  • Next, complete the XL Pattern through XL Row 18.
  • Continue to add increasing rows by adding 1 dc to each side of the row and 2dc into both of the middle sts. For example, by following this pattern your next row will look like this:

XL Row 19: Ch 2, turn. Dc 16. 2dc in the next 2 sts. Dc   16. (36)

  • Once you’ve reached the desired width of the cup, stop adding increasing rows.
  • Add 3-4 rows of dc’s to the bottom of the cup, or as many as you need to reach the desired length.
  • Continue with the finishing instructions. You may want to make a longer chain for the back strap.
